As the mother of a teenage daughter who uses a wheelchair, I was constantly disheartened to have her spend a good amount of her day sitting in a cold, clinical-looking wheelchair with a black seat cover.
Like all teen girls, my daughter is concerned with fashion and her appearance and the time we spent coordinating her outfits seemed to be nullified once she sat in her lifeless chair.
For months, I searched the internet looking for seat covers and other wheelchair accessories that would be age-appropriate and enhance her personality. I came up empty-handed so I began shopping for cool fabrics and sewing the seat covers mys elf.
My daughter loves denim, bright colors and florals and it was so much fun making her seat covers to brighten her chair. I even made sets which allowed the seat cover and the back cover to switch out with other patterns thus creating several mix-and-match sets.
With each cover I made, I learned something new and soon I was making covers for other people who are wheelchair users. They are great for everyday use or to coordinate with an outfit for a special occasion like a wedding, recital or school homecoming.
